Welcome to Speak Up Auburn. This site is managed by the City of Auburn&#39;s Community Development Department to provide a new platform for residents, business owners and students to engage and make their voice heard on various projects happening in Auburn.&nbsp;

The City of Auburn has created a small &quot;Community Fund&quot; with the goal of supporting small, community identified projects in Auburn. The purpose of these projects is to support Auburn in being a healthy, inclusive, and engaged community where residents have a love of place, a sense of belonging, and an ability to influence the future of the community.Historically, the City has had something called the Community Matching Grant (more information is available on our City website for the <a href="http://www.auburnwa.gov/matchinggrants" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Matching Grant program</a>). Over the years, this program has helped neighborhoods with HOA&#39;s fund small projects such as neighborhood park refurbishment, installation of Little Free Libraries, neighborhood entrance signs, and more. This program provides a great service to our neighborhoods and will continue, however, we wanted to make a similar program available to those communities that do not have established HOAs. This is why the Community Fund was created - to help those areas do similar projects. With this new program, residents can identify the project and participate in it&#39;s completion and the City will act as the project manager with the goal of completing the project within the calendar year.This will be the second year of this new Community Fund program. We are prioritizing communities of color in the Valley area of Auburn, as historically funding has not reached these communities. Therefore projects for this fund MUST promote inclusive engagement and enhance community wellness. We define wellness as community members having the chance to create relationships with each other, feeling like they are a part of a community that has a safe and inviting atmosphere for everyone, and being able to have physical, social, and mental well-being.Please submit project ideas using the mapping tool below (Pitch Your Project - Map) or if you have a general idea submit it under &quot;Community Ideas&quot;. During the application phase (January - March), we will be collecting these project ideas from community members. The City will look at these ideas and choose ones that fit the scope of the program, and present it back to the community to be voted on sometime during the summer (see timeline to the right). As we move forward, this webpage will be continuously updated with the status of this program and with any other feedback requests we have of residents. This plan is designed to address climate-related challenges and to support Auburn&rsquo;s commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and resilience. By providing a framework for meeting the goals and policies within the city&rsquo;s Climate Element of the Comprehensive Plan, the Climate Action Plan will help Auburn prepare for and respond to the impacts of climate change. What is the Climate Element?The Climate Element is a strategic section of Auburn&rsquo;s Comprehensive Plan that outlines the city&rsquo;s approach to addressing climate change. The element was adopted by the Auburn City Council on December 16, 2024, as part of the 2024 Periodic Comprehensive Plan Update process. It responds to House Bill 1181, passed by the Washington State Legislature in 2023, which requires cities to include climate-related goals, policies, and actions in their comprehensive plans by 2029.Auburn has chosen to proactively plan for climate change now, rather than waiting until 2029. This proactive approach is critical in addressing the immediate impacts of climate change and ensuring the city is prepared for long-term climate response strategies. Key Elements of the Climate Element:The Climate Element consists of two major sub-elements: Resilience and Mitigation.<ol><li>Resilience Sub-Element: This sub-element focuses on preparing Auburn&rsquo;s natural environment, infrastructure, and citizens for the impacts of climate change. It includes strategies for improving environmental health, protecting local services, and ensuring the city can adapt to increasing temperatures, severe storms, flooding, and other climate-related hazards. The resilience strategies will also address environmental justice, equity, and the importance of conserving natural areas.</li><li>Greenhouse Gas Emissions Mitigation Sub-Element: This sub-element outlines the city&rsquo;s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It includes identifying major sources of emissions, setting reduction targets, and recommending specific actions to lower Auburn&rsquo;s contribution to climate change.</li></ol> Why does the Climate Element Matter?Auburn, nestled in the Green River Valley with Mount Rainier in the background, is a vibrant community with a rich history and a strong industrial economy. However, the city is vulnerable to several climate-related hazards, including rising temperatures, extreme heat events, severe storms and flooding, and increased droughts and wildfires. These risks threaten the health, safety, and economic vitality of Auburn residents and the environment.Through the Climate Element, Auburn can take action to reduce these risks and ensure that it remains a sustainable, livable, and safe place to live, work, and visit. The Climate Element not only aligns with state and regional requirements but also reflects Auburn&rsquo;s values of sustainability, environmental stewardship, and economic resilience. The revised Auburn Downtown Plan is envisioned to supplement the existing plan by providing a refreshed perspective of the land use, development, and transportation options serving the downtown area.7/25/22 UPDATEThe Auburn Downtown Plan update process is underway! This week we begin meeting with community members in a focus group setting to gather feedback on perspectives of our downtown. Feedback from these focus groups and from outreach events throughout the summer will assist the project team in developing a future vision for downtown. About this ProjectThe Auburn Downtown Plan and Environmental Impact Study (EIS), first adopted in 2001, has provided direction for the development of the downtown area over the past 20 years. While this plan has been highly successful due to the dedication of time, financial commitments, and contributions from the community, we are now ready to plan for the next 20 years.The City of Auburn was awarded a grant through the Washington State Department of Commerce proposes to refresh and rethink the existing Plan, and create a Planned Action Ordinance for the downtown area. This allows the City to incorporate changing conditions and characteristics, new community and staff visions for downtown, remain compliant with Regional Growth Center requirements, and build from 20 years of implementing the previous plan. Findings from this plan will be incorporated into the 2024 Periodic Comprehensive Plan, which is currently underway, and is due by December 2024.
